Staff Writer, Steam Railway

Job Introduction

As part of Bauer Media’s hobbies portfolio, Steam Railway is the best-selling railway magazine on the shelves – backed up by the latest industry-standard ABC results. Its combination of comprehensive news, high quality photography and fascinating in-depth features has secured this coveted position in a competitive sector.

Role Responsibility

Reporting into the deputy editor and editor, this role is an integral one within the Steam Railway team. You will be expected to be able to write news and features, as well as assist the wider team with news gathering, feature commissioning and ideas generation. Training will be available, both on and off the job, via Bauer’s award-winning Academy programme. What we can’t teach you is genuine knowledge and enthusiasm for the subject – both of which are essential in this role. 

In addition to writing about steam and the nostalgia surrounding this popular hobby, you will also be asked to liaise with photographers and occasionally even take some of your own images – these need to be of a high enough standard for publication (we’re not expecting professional ability though that would be advantageous).  

The 30k+ Steam Railway audience is highly engaged and that means you will also be expected to monitor our email inbox and social media messages. As well as the ‘office’ role, at the editor’s discretion, you will be asked to travel to preserved railways and functions or to guest ride on charters, during which time you will be expected to represent the magazine in a professional manner. 

The Ideal Candidate

What you will bring:

A passion for preserved steam locos, carriages, buildings and the period when steam was at its height. It’s not all about looking back and we also want to look forward to the challenges and rewards that come from being a part of today’s preservation movement.

More practically, you need to have a good working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Teams and Mail and have a high level of literacy. Evidence of good writing skills must be shown.

This role is an entry-level one but there is potential for the right candidate to progress to a senior writer and even further in due course.
