Senior Data Engineer

We operate a ‘hub and spoke’ model for digital. The Central Data team supports business units across strategy, innovation, product, commercial, marketing.  We are Subject Matter Experts and platforms owners for consumer data, eCRM, analytics & business intelligence. As part of a combined community of digital experts, the teams work in partnership to create outstanding services to our users and deliver commercial success.

The focus of your role: 

Act as the core Subject Matter Expert for consumer data engineering within the Data Team. Help us to guide, maintain, develop and continually improve the data & analytics architecture we have built in-house that supports nearly 500 users, over 200 well known and respected magazines & radio stations and contains diverse sources that once blended, tell a story for our brands and consumers all in one place.

Role Responsibility

  • Expert in SQL (Postgres, Cloud SQL etc) and experienced in using R or Python to build, maintain and orchestrate data pipelines across a business.
  • Confident working with API’s and coding/scripting pipelines to surface and transform this data into analysis friendly assets using technologies such as BigQuery or Amazon Redshift.
  • Data engineering excellence,  ensuring not only is data integrated but it's available, reliable, and accurate.
  • Data ownership, although the source of truth may exist elsewhere, it's made usable by our pipelines so must be scalable, and many cases, GDPR compliant.
  • Support, mentor or collaborate a team of engineers to achieve a solution or deliver a project. We work as a team and balance/exchange skills to deliver the best outcome for our stakeholders.
  • Advanced building or support and building of dashboards across business areas using a mixture of Looker (80%), Data Studio (10%) & Power BI (10%).
  • Working across teams briefing/advising on data projects and help advise on the best use of data analytics technologies. Advise the wider Digital team on the development of pilots to test innovative ways of capturing or using data.


Nice to have or know:

  • Undertake and deliver analytics projects of scale while managing smaller adhoc queries (e.g. target audience deep dives, product user journeys and consumption analysis)
  • Web analytics technologies such as Google Analytics/Firebase to design end to end data solutions that deliver comprehensive digital insights. 
  • CRM data support, either through segmentation of users, or through data generation & permissions.
  • Ad tech support, ad partners, metrics and revenue, pipelines and 1st party data imports.
  • Machine Learning support, either generating the projects & products directly or supporting the dev team in its use.

The Ideal Candidate

  • Passion for data of all shapes, sizes & volumes!
  • Understanding of value creation opportunities from use of data
  • Understanding and usage of SQL with both relational and non-relational data
  • Experience in building out data models to answer business-critical questions
  • Possess a high level of commercial acumen
  • Comfortable embracing ambiguity, thrive in a start-up environment whilst able to navigate a large matrix organisation
  • Resilience under pressure and at your best when there are lots of moving parts
  • Experience working successfully with senior management
  • Experience of developing large data queries and creating highly effective insights
  • Understanding of one or more data scripting language such as Python, R or SQL or tooling relevant to the specifics of the role
  • Ability to communicate complex concepts and issues to non-experts
  • Experience with BI Platform, Looker, an advantage. You will curate end user reports using ‘LookML’ - Looker’s language for describing dimensions, aggregates, calculations and data relationships.
