News Editor - Classic Car Weekly

Job Introduction

Classic Car Weekly, Britain’s leading classic car newspaper, is looking for someone with top-notch writing skills, a nose for a great news story and a passion for old cars to join our team as news editor.

This is a key role on Classic Car Weekly and will involve skilfully writing and commissioning stories, being able to manage contributors and hit deadlines consistently, build important relationships with key stakeholders in Britain’s buoyant classic car market and be responsible for packing the opening pages each week with the biggest news stories.

You’ll be responsible for breaking the biggest stories to hit Britain’s classic car movement and working alongside a team of journalists who are passionate about cars, based at our offices in Peterborough, and helping them to get the latest stories from classic shows, dealers and auctions across the country. You’ll also be in the driving seat of some of Britain’s greatest classic cars and delivering articles about them to Classic Car Weekly’s readers.

Ideally, you’ll already be reporting for an existing publication or website, or a staff writer ready to take the next step in your career.  You’ll also need to be versatile and a first-class team player, and excited by the prospect of visiting some of Britain’s biggest classic car shows and driving a wide range of cars.

Role Responsibility

  • Taking overall charge of Classic Car Weekly’s news pages and liaising with the editor to ensure the publication has the right balance and coverage of key news stories.
  • Working with both CCW’s in-house team members and outside contributors, and commissioning news stories.
  • Writing news stories as required, including Classic Car Weekly’s front-page leads.
  • Taking part in editorial team meetings and contributing ideas that improve CCW’s mix of news and features.
  • Assisting with event coverage as required, including occasional weekend shows.
  • Assist with content for the Classic Car Weekly website and social media where required.
  • Liaise with readers and other contributors by email, on the phone and face to face.
  • Proofread editorial features, news stories and other content, if required.

The Ideal Candidate

  • Excellent writing skills for print and web
  • Highly organised and good time management
  • Able to work with and brief a wide range of contributors effectively
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to build long-term relationships
  • Knowledge of Britain’s classic car movement, including the market, stakeholders, and events
  • Keen attention to detail
  • Ability to work flexibly and manage multiple tasks
  • A good team player but able to work on own initiative
