Commissioning Editor - The Story People (Fixed Term Contract)

Job Introduction

Our Team:

The Real Life content team is a lively and talented group of journalists. Working in a fast-paced environment, their focus is on commissioning and writing the best and most engaging stories for Bauer’s Real Life magazines including Take a Break weekly & monthly and that’s life! Weekly & monthly.

The Focus of the Role:

To manage, assess for publication and secure for the best price, strong stories submitted direct to the Real Life magazines via www.thestorypeople.co.uk

Work with the Group Head of Commissioning and Content (Real Life)/ Head of Real Life/ Commissioning editors, to understand and work within agreed brand and content strategy

Role Responsibility

  • Commissioning strong stories with interviewees that have been submitted through thestorypeople.com
  • Conducting interviews for commissioned stories
  • Making best use of the writing team to write up true life stories commissioned via thestorypeople.com, being mindful of both schedule, and budgets
  • Use planning on Monday.com and support Commissioning Editors by discussing available stories and making sure they are delivered to the brand team on time.
  • supply whole feature packages, with interview, images and copy (as required) through WW assets.
  • To think strategically, and support Group Head of Commissioning and Content (Real Life) with syndication opportunities as required

The Ideal Candidate

  • Expertise: best-in-class journalist with extensive experience in Real Life stories, passionate and authoritative 
  • A strong eye for a good story
  • Excellent communication, interview and negotiation skills
  • Creative thinker - able to operate across different media channels 
  • Understanding of user need to ensure commissioned content is appropriately focused     
  • Great planning skills: efficient, diary-driven and organised​  
  • Professional pride – a desire to hit the correct quality threshold for each title/channel
  • Ability to maximising all opportunities for sourcing relevant and engaging content through input into marketing of The Story People
