Commissioning Editor – Mass & Celebrity Brands

Job Introduction

Our Team:

The Real Life content team is a lively and talented group of journalists. Working in a fast-paced environment, their focus is on commissioning and writing the best and most engaging stories for Bauer’s Real Life magazines including Take a Break weekly & monthly and that’s life! Weekly & monthly, Closer, Bella and Yours.

The Focus of the Role:

Implementing content strategy and overall editorial vision by commissioning and developing original articles and features for Bella, Closer and Yours, that can be used across print and digital, as well as re-purposing existing editorial. Utilises a network of agencies, writers, subject experts, and Bauer’s in-house story agency (TSP) to source engaging and innovative content while working to budget.

In addition, this role is responsible for chasing strong stories from leads in other titles/media. Together with head of content, the commissioning editor will support writers within the Content Team and external agencies/freelancers to ensure content is produced to the highest standard and delivered on time and to brief.

Role Responsibility

  • Liaising with the brand deputy eds/ assistant eds across Bella, Closer and Yours, to understand editorial vision, and to pitch original and innovative story ideas.
  • Commissioning all real life content, including from agencies, freelancers and in-house writers, to ensure copy is delivered on time and to the brief
  • Working with the Group Head of Content & Commissioning, head of content, and the other commissioning editors to drive value for agency stories
  • Support the head of content, by giving writers, researchers and content creators a clear commissioning/briefing to ensure quality and accuracy of content  
  • Co-planning across portfolio with other Commissioning Editors, managing schedules and budgets – Main focus will be commissioning for Mass & Celeb but Commissioning Editors will work as a team, and be able to cover for one another where appropriate.
  • Use planning on Monday.com and utilise new technology to best advantage
  • Writing copy as required

  • Expertise: best-in-class journalists on their subject matter, passionate and authoritative ​  
  • Strong communication and negotiation skills
  • Creative thinkers - able to operate across channels 
  • Understanding user need to ensure commissioned content is appropriately focused  ​   
  • Great planners: efficient, diary-driven and organised​  
  • Professional pride – a desire to hit the correct quality threshold for each title/channel
  • Ability to develop a network of agencies, freelance writers and subject experts, maximising all opportunities for sourcing relevant and engaging content
